A Father's Take on the Mommy Wars

We've got another column on Time.com today, this one on the Mommy Wars. Go read it there. It includes some surprising information for anyone who's been watching the mommy wars - less divides these two sides than we customarily assume.

You can comment here if you like, but also, Time is enabling comments or at least "Talk Back" on their site, which is like a "letters to the editor" box.

Happy Mother's Day to the Moms in your family!

Just finished reading your Time column about the Mommy wars. I am still chewing on what you wrote.

I wonder if any research has been done about whether or not career moms (I say career because I believe both types of Moms work - just different titles, though) have more opportunities to have adult talk with other adults.

I am asking because in my neighborhood, there are so many new moms in their 30s and 40s with babies. They always tell me they want to have adult conversations with other adults besides talking to their babies. They love their babies but they also want to talk to other adults too.

Since I am an adult, not yet married with kids (this will change), they are happy to talk with me. I love babies so it is a win-win situation.

Thanks again for a great read!

Much as these moms say they wish to talk to adults, most regress quickly to telling you how wonderful their (ugly, cranky, ill-behaved) sprog is. That puts me off. I have friends who have kids who seem to have had lobotomies as they went from being smart, well-read, multifaceted, eloquent people to one-track, holier-than-thou stay-at-home mothers. I find their judgement of childfree living condescending and their constant cooing over their kids unbearable. Is it any surprise that they cannot find adults other than those with kids and similar chat topics to chat with?
